The Art Bridge
The Art Bridge
For six years, from 2016 to 2022, M and the Mater Dei school from Leuven worked together on the project 'The Art Bridge'. The aim was to find out whether art can help to give children more self-confidence.
Mater Dei is a city school with a very diverse audience. Art plays an important role in the pedagogical approach.
With the support of M-LIFE and the Queen Paola Foundation, M and Mater Dei developed a project that involved children intensively in the museum. There were specific activities for each grade. For example, the children of the third grade attended a series of workshops guided by artists or arts-education facilitators, such as photographer Evy Raes and participatory theater maker Katrien Oosterlinck. The children of the sixth grade followed a guide course and gave a tour to their parents and teachers. The practical implementation of the project was in the hands of M's public relations department and a teacher from Mater Dei.
Positive impact
Research done by Katrien Goossens showed that 'The Art Bridge' had a positive impact on children's attitude to art. It also made them more self-assured and more aware of the importance of working constructively with peers.
M too learned from the project. We want to get children excited about art and that is why a significant part of our audience work is focused on schools. 'The Art Bridge' has taught us a lot about how schools function and how we can tailor our offerings to class groups even better—interesting findings that we like to share with the world. That is why we bundled the set-up of the project together with our experiences in a publication that can serve as an inspiration for education and the cultural sector.
